October 2007: "Lowell Palmer Weicker, Jr. (born May 16, 1931) is an American politician who has served as a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and Governor of Connecticut. Though a member of the Republican Party during his time in Congress, he later left the Republican Party and became one of the few independents to be elected as a state governor in the United States in recent years."
