Oxford University/University of Oxford

Self Description

March 2002: "Oxford is a unique and historic institution. As the oldest English-speaking university in the world, it lays claim to eight centuries of continuous existence....the years since the war, Oxford has added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as a focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate." http://www.ox.ac.uk/aboutoxford/history.shtml

Third-Party Descriptions

February 2011: 'Such an approach is unlikely to attract much support in Britain, where A-levels, written exams normally taken at the end of the final two years of high school, are an object of national fascination. At Oxford and Cambridge, A grades in three subjects are normally seen as a prerequisite for an applicant to be considered. A spokeswoman for Oxford said: “36,000 students got three A’s last year. Of those 17,000 applied to Oxford. We have 3,000 places.”'

Feb 06, 2011 Elite Institutions are Tested on Diversity

QUOTE: Taken together the reports paint a picture of elite institutions struggling to adapt to the modern world in a country where universities still depend on the government for most of their funding — and where the independent Office for Fair Access is supposed to make sure that any university wishing to charge the new £9,000, or $15,000, a year maximum tuition has made sufficient progress in encouraging participation by low-income and other under-represented groups.

Nov 27, 2007 Protests Greet Far-Right Speakers at Oxford

QUOTE: The protest followed weeks of controversy surrounding the student organizers’ decision to give a platform to David Irving, a historian specializing in Hitler’s Germany who was released late last year after serving 13 months of a three-year prison term imposed in Austria for speeches denying that the Nazis exterminated six millions Jews.

May 18, 2007 Net Censorship on the Rise: Twenty-five out of 41 governments studied block or filter Net content, says a survey by the university-backed OpenNet Initiative (ONI)

QUOTE: Twenty-five out of 41 governments studied block or filter internet content, according to a survey carried out by OpenNet Initiative (ONI), which is made up of groups at Cambridge University, Harvard Law School, Oxford University and the University of Toronto. This compares to just a few countries filtering content five years ago, said the researchers. The governments are not just blocking websites but also services and applications such as Google Maps or Skype.

Aug 29, 2006 Times Withholds Web Article in Britain

QUOTE: In adapting technology intended for targeted advertising to keep the article out of Britain, The Times addressed one of the concerns of news organizations publishing online: how to avoid running afoul of local publishing laws...“It’s never a happy choice to deny any reader a story,” said Jill Abramson,“But this was preferable to not having it on the Web at all.”

Jan 01, 1999 Sex and Social Justice

QUOTE: The feminism defended here has five salient features: it is internationalist, humanist, liberal, concerned with the social shaping of preference and desire, and, finally, concerned with sympathetic understanding[…] Among the advantages of the combination is an opportunity to link feminist inquiry closely to the progress that has been made during the past few decades in articulating the elements of a theory of both national and global justice.
