Self Description

February 2002: "Penn's founder, Benjamin Franklin, put it more succinctly: Students should learn 'everything that is useful and everything that is ornamental.' The University of Pennsylvania still follows that advice. Penn has a history of educational innovation consistent with Franklin's instructions, including the nation's first medical school, its first business school, the first university teaching hospital and the first modern liberal-arts curriculum." http://www.upenn.edu/about_penn/

Third-Party Descriptions

June 2010: "At a handful of private universities with sizable endowments, including Princeton, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, the goal is quite literally to eliminate loan debt for most graduating seniors."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/05/AR2010060500717.html

February 2008: "But long-fought battles for unionization have been underway at some private universities -- including Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, where graduate students have held strikes in recent years -- and student unions there still are not recognized."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/02/AR2008020201969.html

August 2006: In October 2000, nearly 300 former inmates sued the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kligman, Dow Chemical and Johnson & Johnson for injuries they said occurred during the experiments at Holmesburg, but the suit was dismissed because the statute of limitations had expired.
