Republican Party (U.S.) / Republican National Committee

Self Description

January 2002: "The Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge... for 28 of the forty years from 1952 through 1992, the White House was in Republican hands - under Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush...Republicans have a long and rich history with basic principles: Individuals, not government, can make the best decisions; all people are entitled to equal rights; and decisions are best made close to home." http://www.rnc.org/gopinfo/history

Third-Party Descriptions

October 2013: "Battles over spending are nothing unusual—indeed, Congress has not passed a proper budget on time since 1997. But this battle represents something new. House Republicans are blocking the budget not because they object to its contents, but because they object to something else entirely: Barack Obama’s health-care reform....Republicans are setting a precedent which, if followed, would make America ungovernable....If a party with such a modest electoral mandate threatens to shut down government unless the other side repeals a law it does not like, apparently settled legislation will always be vulnerable to repeal by the minority. Washington will be permanently paralysed and America condemned to chronic uncertainty."

July 2013: "The Republicans who control state legislatures throughout the region say such laws are needed to prevent voter fraud. But such fraud is extremely rare, and Democrats are concerned that the proposed changes will make it harder for many poor voters and members of minorities — who tend to vote Democratic — to cast their ballots in states that once discriminated against black voters with poll taxes and literacy tests."

December 2011: "The precipitous decline of organized labor — principally a result of economic forces, not legal ones — cemented unions’ dependence on the board, despite its imperfections. Meanwhile, business interests, represented by an increasingly conservative Republican Party, became more assertive in fighting unions."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/17/opinion/crippling-the-right-to-organize.html

May 2010: 'Now he has filed an appeal on behalf of the Republican National Committee, which argues that the logic of Citizens United should allow unlimited contributions to political parties, now capped at $30,400 for individuals and forbidden for corporations, so long as they are spent on activities unrelated to federal elections. (The shorthand for this kind of contribution is “soft money.”)'

December 2008: 'Stanzel said the White House is also still "working to acquire" e-mails involving official government business that were transmitted by presidential aides through accounts operated by the Republican National Committee, a problem also first publicized almost three years ago. "We continue to be in communication with RNC officials about recovering official records," he said without offering details. Such records are subject to the Presidential Records Act, which requires their transfer to the Archives at noon on Jan. 20.'

September 2008: "Now, with the help of a 2008 Supreme Court decision, Crawford vs. Marion County (Indiana) Election Board, white Republicans in some areas will keep eligible blacks from voting by requiring driver's licenses. Not only is this new-fangled discrimination constitutional, it's spreading."

November 2007: "Republican officials, for their part, have not given up their efforts to reach church members. The Republican National Committee sent representatives to the recent National Baptist Convention in Philadelphia, the National Progressive Baptist Convention in the District, and the 100th anniversary celebration of the Church of God in Christ in Memphis to interact with black pastors, according to Shannon Reeves, who oversees the RNC's efforts to increase its following among blacks."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/25/AR2007112501223.html

October 2007: Danny Diaz, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, chided Mrs. Clinton for saying that she would take politics out of science, contending that her record is replete with political manipulations.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/05/us/politics/05clinton.html

June 2007: The interim staff report found that at least 88 White House officials enjoyed RNC e-mail accounts, including Karl Rove, the president's senior adviser; Andrew Card, the former White House chief of staff; and Ken Mehlman, the former White House director of political affairs. White House officials wrongly employed RNC e-mail accounts for official purposes, for example, communicating with agencies about federal appointments and policies. The RNC has preserved more than 140,000 e-mails sent or received by Mr. Rove. Over one-half involved communicants using official '.gov' accounts. But the RNC has also destroyed massive numbers of White House e-mails. For instance, of the 88 White House officials with RNC e-mail accounts, no records were preserved for 51 individuals.

January 2007: The Republican National Committee has been one of the strongest critics of the [McCain-Finegold--Ed.] law, although McCain is one of his party's leading presidential contenders and a party to the appeal of the lower court's decision.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/19/AR2007011901119.html

October 2006: The result has been a carnival of ugly, especially on the GOP side, where operatives are trying to counter what polls show is a hostile political environment by casting opponents as fatally flawed characters. The National Republican Campaign Committee is spending more than 90 percent of its advertising budget on negative ads, according to GOP operatives, and the rest of the party seems to be following suit.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/26/AR2006102601811.html

September 2006: The National Republican Congressional Committee, which this year dispatched a half-dozen operatives to comb through tax, court and other records looking for damaging information on Democratic candidates, plans to spend more than 90 percent of its $50 million-plus advertising budget on what officials described as negative ads.

Oct 05, 2013 No way to run a country: The Land of the Free is starting to look ungovernable. Enough is enough

QUOTE: ...Republicans are setting a precedent which, if followed, would make America ungovernable. Voters have seen fit to give their party control of one arm of government—the House of Representatives—while handing the Democrats the White House and the Senate. If a party with such a modest electoral mandate threatens to shut down government unless the other side repeals a law it does not like, apparently settled legislation will always be vulnerable to repeal by the minority. Washington will be permanently paralysed and America condemned to chronic uncertainty.

Jul 05, 2013 After Ruling, States Rush to Enact Voting Laws

QUOTE: State officials across the South are aggressively moving ahead with new laws requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls after the Supreme Court decision striking down a portion of the Voting Rights Act. The Republicans who control state legislatures throughout the region say such laws are needed to prevent voter fraud. But such fraud is extremely rare, and Democrats are concerned that the proposed changes will make it harder for many poor voters and members of minorities — who tend to vote Democratic — to cast their ballots in states that once discriminated against black voters with poll taxes and literacy tests.

New York Times
Dec 16, 2011 Crippling the Right to Organize (Op-Ed)

QUOTE: three decades of Republican resistance to the board — an unwillingness to recognize the fundamental right of workers to band together, if they wish, to seek better pay and working conditions. But Mr. Obama is also partly to blame; in trying to install partisan stalwarts on the board, as his predecessors did, he is all but guaranteeing that the impasse will continue.

Sep 25, 2011 Controversy erupts over Campus Republicans bake sale plans

QUOTE: baked goods will be sold to white men for $2.00, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1.00, black men for $0.75 and Native American men for $0.25. All women will get $0.25 off those prices....a statement about pending legislation that would let the California universities consider race or national origin during the admission process.

CNN (Cable News Network)
Mar 27, 2011 American Thought Police

QUOTE: The hard right... has a modus operandi when it comes to scholars expressing views it dislikes: never mind the substance, go for the smear. And that demand for copies of e-mails is obviously motivated by no more than a hope that it will provide something, anything, that can be used to subject Mr. Cronon to the usual treatment... But there’s a clear chilling effect when scholars know that they may face witch hunts whenever they say things the G.O.P. doesn’t like.

New York Times
Jan 16, 2011 The War on Logic

QUOTE: But the same spending would still be necessary if we were to undo reform. So the G.O.P. argument here is exactly like claiming that my mortgage payments, which I’ll have to make no matter what we do tonight, are a cost of going out for dinner.

New York Times
Jan 06, 2011 Republicans Are Given a Price Tag for Health Law Repeal, but Reject It

QUOTE: The new House speaker, John A. Boehner, flatly rejected the report, saying it was based largely on chicanery by Democrats....effectively putting him on a war footing with the independent analysts whose calculations generally guide discussions about the projected cost or savings of any legislation.

New York Times
Dec 16, 2010 Wall Street Whitewash

QUOTE: The bipartisan Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission was established by law to “examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States.” The hope was that it would be a modern version of the Pecora investigation of the 1930s, which documented Wall Street abuses and helped pave the way for financial reform. Instead, however, the commission has broken down along partisan lines, unable to agree on even the most basic points.

New York Times
May 26, 2010 California Puts Vote Overhaul on the Ballot

QUOTE: a [California-Ed.] ballot measure that would replace traditional primaries in state and Congressional elections with, effectively, two rounds of voting. All candidates would run in the first round, and the top two vote-getters — regardless of party affiliation, or unaffiliation — would then face each other in the general election. Voters’ ultimate choice could be two Republicans or two Democrats, or two candidates with high name recognition, or deep pockets, or populist appeal.

New York Times
May 04, 2010 Free Speech Through the Foggy Lens of Election Law (Sidebar)

QUOTE: Corporate contributions to candidates are still banned, but corporations may now spend freely in candidate elections. The distinction between contributions and spending has not been popular in the legal academy.

New York Times
Apr 23, 2010 U.S.’s Toughest Immigration Law Is Signed in Arizona

QUOTE: Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona signed the toughest illegal immigration bill in the country into law on Friday, aimed at identifying, prosecuting and deporting illegal immigrants. The governor’s move unleashed immediate protests and reignited the divisive battle over immigration reform nationally. Even before she signed the bill at a 4:30 p.m. news conference here, President Obama strongly criticized it.

New York Times
Aug 18, 2009 The Most Outrageous U.S. Lies About Global Healthcare

QUOTE: Many of the most wildly inaccurate statements [about health systems] have been directed abroad -- sometimes at the United States' closest allies, such as Britain and Canada, and often at the best health-care systems in the world.

Dec 25, 2008 Pardon Lasts One Day for Developer in Fraud Case

QUOTE: President Bush changed his mind on Christmas Eve, pulling back a pardon he had extended a day earlier to a Brooklyn developer at the center of a Long Island real estate fraud case and adding a bizarre twist to the episode...Mr. Toussie’s father, Robert, donated $28,500 to the Republican National Committee last April, for what apparently was his first political contribution.

New York Times
Dec 21, 2008 Bush E-Mails May Be Secret a Bit Longer: Legal Battles, Technical Difficulties Delay Required Transfer to Archives

QUOTE: the administration began trying only in recent months to recover from White House backup tapes hundreds of thousands of e-mails that were reported missing from readily accessible files in 2005. The risks that the transfer may be incomplete are also pointed up by a continuing legal battle between a coalition of historians and nonprofit groups over access to Vice President Cheney's records.

QUOTE: Democrats in Michigan are trying to block what they call a Republican effort to deny voting rights to people who have lost their homes in the mortgage crisis.

Daily Telegraph
Sep 11, 2008 ‘Jim Crawford’ Republicans: The GOP is working to keep eligible African-Americans from voting in several states.

QUOTE: It was a mainstay of Jim Crow segregation: for 100 years after the Civil War, Southern white Democrats kept eligible blacks from voting with poll taxes, literacy tests and property requirements...Now, with the help of a 2008 Supreme Court decision, Crawford vs. Marion County (Indiana) Election Board, white Republicans in some areas will keep eligible blacks from voting by requiring driver's licenses.

Newsweek
Sep 02, 2008 The Caucus: Talk Radio Host Slams Media on Palin Coverage

QUOTE: “The American media has hit a new low in tabloid journalism,” he declared. “They’ve taken a 17-year-old girl and they are trying to use the crisis pregnancy she finds herself in as a battering ram, a club, to damage her mother, her family. It’s outrageous. It’s tabloid journalism and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.”

New York Times
Jul 10, 2008 Officials Investigate 3 Alabama Counties in Voter Fraud Accusations

QUOTE: In May, a local citizens group gathered affidavits detailing several cases in which at least one Democratic county official paid citizens for their votes, or encouraged them to vote multiple times. The affidavits were presented to state officials in Montgomery, the capital, and after the June 3 primary, the Alabama attorney general, Troy King, a Republican, seized voting records from the primary election in Bullock, Lowndes and Perry Counties.

New York Times
Jun 11, 2008 Spies, Lies and the White House: Buried in a Senate report, new revelations about pre-war deception

QUOTE: A previously undisclosed CIA report written in the summer of 2002 questioned the "credibility" and "truthfulness" of an Al Qaeda detainee who became a key source for the Bush administration's claims about links between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.

Newsweek
Jun 05, 2008 Ex-Obama Fund-Raiser Is Convicted of Fraud

QUOTE: Antoin Rezko, a once-powerful fund-raiser who helped propel the career of Senator Barack Obama, was found guilty on Wednesday by a federal jury of 16 counts, including fraud, money laundering and bribery in an influence-peddling scheme that touched the highest levels of the administration of Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich of Illinois.
