Columbia University

Self Description

May 2007: "From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights. Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education."

Third-Party Descriptions

March 2012: "But look as well to Columbia University and what happened last week after President Obama, an alumnus, announced that he would give a commencement address at its all-women’s sister school, Barnard College, instead. A Columbia blog lit up with anti-Barnard rants, several stressing crude, tired sexual stereotypes. A few were apparently written by women."

May 2009: 'At Columbia Business School, all students must pledge to an honor code: “As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” The code has been in place for about three years and came about after discussions between students and faculty.'

September 2007: The event has drawn attention to Bollinger's record at Columbia, where issues related to Israel and the Middle East have exploded in controversy in nearly every one of his five years as president. At many institutions, the controversies might be purely academic, but at Columbia, they are points of passionate belief among students, faculty, trustees and donors.

May 2007: Columbia fired financial aid director David Charlow yesterday in response to the revelation that he held more than $100,000 worth of stock in the same lender.

March 2005: As Columbia University awaits a report on charges of intimidation of Jewish students in classes in Middle East studies, a small group of graduate students began circulating a petition yesterday calling for the resignation of Columbia's president, Lee C. Bollinger, because he "failed to defend our faculty, thereby nurturing an environment of fear and intimidation throughout the university."

Apr 14, 2016 Investigating the algorithms that govern our lives

QUOTE: Venkatasubramanian is a computer science professor at the University of Utah. He’s someone who thinks about algorithmic fairness, ever since he read a short story by Cory Doctorow published in 2006, called “Human Readable.” The story takes place in a future world, similar to ours, but in which all national infrastructure (traffic, email, the media, etc.) is run by “centralized emergent networks,” modeled after ant colonies. Or in other words: a network of algorithms. The plot revolves around two lovers: a network engineer who is certain the system is incorruptible, and a lawyer who knows it’s already been corrupted. “It got me thinking,” says Venkatasubramanian. “What happens if we live in a world that is totally driven by algorithms?”

Nov 19, 2014 A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA

QUOTE: UVA's emphasis on honor is so pronounced that since 1998, 183 people have been expelled for honor-code violations such as cheating on exams. And yet paradoxically, not a single student at UVA has ever been expelled for sexual assault. "Think about it," says Susan Russell, whose UVA daughter's sexual-assault report helped trigger a previous federal investigation. "In what world do you get kicked out for cheating, but if you rape someone, you can stay?"

May 22, 2014 Why colleges fail at investigating and punishing sex crimes (Op-Ed)

QUOTE: the demise of in loco parentis left colleges in an uncertain and awkward position. If they now had little or no control over student conduct, what role should they play — if any — when students misbehaved? And what if students acted in ways that would be criminal in broader society?...The disciplinary systems of colleges, designed to deal with plagiarism and roommate spats, have proved utterly inadequate to deal with the more serious issue of sexual assault.

Mar 12, 2012 Limbaugh and One-Way Wantonness (Op-Ed)

QUOTE: When attacking a woman by questioning her sexual mores, there’s a smorgasbord of slurs, and you can take your rancid pick. Help me out here: where are the comparable nouns for men? What’s a male slut? A role model, in some cases. In others, a presidential candidate.

Jun 24, 2009 Steve Jobs's health: A personal or public matter?

QUOTE: Many investors see the innovative Apple CEO as fundamental to the company's success. If he's unwell, they think they should be told.

May 29, 2009 A Promise to Be Ethical in an Era of Immorality

QUOTE: the issue of ethics and corporate social responsibility has taken on greater urgency among students about to graduate. While this might easily be dismissed as a passing fancy — or simply a defensive reaction to the current business environment — business school professors say that is not the case.
