University of California - Berkeley (UC Berkeley)

Self Description

May 2003: "A place of diversity and abundance, UC Berkeley is truly a prototype of a contemporary university. The oldest of the UC campuses,... More than 7,000 courses and more than 100 undergraduate majors are available in the sciences, humanities, arts, social sciences and natural resources."

Third-Party Descriptions

March 2012: 'Katehi apologized to students in the days following the protest, and Yudof, while stating his support for the Davis president, said he was “appalled” by what happened there and at the University of California at Berkeley, where just days earlier police had used batons during a confrontation with students and faculty protesting as part of Occupy. Those statements did little to quell anger, and in further protests, many called for Katehi’s resignation.'

September 2007: But in the early 1990s, the elite campuses began to pull back from their aggressive affirmative-action policies, and in 1996, California voters passed the California Civil Rights Initiative, also known as Proposition 209. After that, race could no longer be a factor in government hiring or public-university admissions. The number of black students at both Berkeley and U.C.L.A. plummeted, and at U.C.L.A. the declines continued throughout the next decade. The reasons weren’t entirely clear, but they seemed to include some combination of the admissions office taking Proposition 209 to heart and black students falling further behind in the academic arms race. (Harris, for instance, scored a 22 on the ACT test — slightly above the national average and well below the U.C.L.A. average.) The changes on U.C.L.A.’s campus were hard to miss. In 1997, the freshman class included 221 black students; last fall it had only 100. In the region with easily the largest black population west of the Mississippi River, the top public university had a freshman class in which barely 1 in 50 students was black.

May 22, 2014 Why colleges fail at investigating and punishing sex crimes (Op-Ed)

QUOTE: the demise of in loco parentis left colleges in an uncertain and awkward position. If they now had little or no control over student conduct, what role should they play — if any — when students misbehaved? And what if students acted in ways that would be criminal in broader society?...The disciplinary systems of colleges, designed to deal with plagiarism and roommate spats, have proved utterly inadequate to deal with the more serious issue of sexual assault.

But in that quest, experts say, colleges face privacy and liability concerns, as well as the basic question of whether subtle "social alarms" such as texting are really better at warning of a possible emergency than are the cold-war-era siren and the under-the-desk-drill.
