Third-Party Descriptions
October 2012: 'Civility is nice, but on college campuses it often takes on a bizarre meaning. In 2009, Yale banned students from making a T-shirt with an F. Scott Fitzgerald quotation — “I think of all Harvard men as sissies,” from his 1920 novel “This Side of Paradise” — to mock Harvard at their annual football game. The T-shirt was blocked after some gay and lesbian students argued that “sissies” amounted to a homophobic slur. “What purports to be humor by targeting a group through slurs is not acceptable,” said Mary Miller, a professor of art history and the dean of Yale College.'

November 2011: "Elite universities such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford give aid to families earning as much as $200,000, which less-selective schools say puts pressure on them to also offer grants to higher-income families. Education experts say such subsidies mean less help for lower- and middle-income students, who fall deeper into debt to pay tuition."

August 2009: 'So Yale University and Yale University Press consulted two dozen authorities, including diplomats and experts on Islam and counterterrorism, and the recommendation was unanimous: The book, “The Cartoons That Shook the World,” should not include the 12 Danish drawings that originally appeared in September 2005. What’s more, they suggested that the Yale press also refrain from publishing any other illustrations of the prophet that were to be included, specifically, a drawing for a children’s book; an Ottoman print; and a sketch by the 19th-century artist Gustave Doré of Muhammad being tormented in Hell, an episode from Dante’s “Inferno” that has been depicted by Botticelli, Blake, Rodin and Dalí.'

October 2007: 'Since 1978, Yale Law School has required recruiters to sign a pledge of nondiscrimination. Military recruiters would not do that because of the Defense Department’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which permits homosexuals to serve in the armed forces as long as they keep their sexual orientation private.'

February 2008: "But long-fought battles for unionization have been underway at some private universities -- including Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, where graduate students have held strikes in recent years -- and student unions there still are not recognized."

September 2007: There is almost an iron law of higher education: the more selective a school is, the fewer low-income students it has. At Harvard and Yale, only about 10 percent of undergraduates receive federal Pell Grants. (Typically, students from the bottom 40 percent of the income distribution are eligible for the Pell.) Even at top public universities, the share is often 15 percent or less. The colleges that are filled with poor and middle-class students almost invariably have low graduation rates. So their graduates are more likely to end up on the wrong side of the 21st century’s educational divide. A bachelor’s degree seems out of reach to a large portion of the American population, and, as a result, other countries have closed the gap in educational attainment with the United States over the last generation.

June 2007: ...Bingham’s excavated artifacts at the Yale Peabody Museum....Everyone agrees that the Machu Picchu artifacts at Yale are modest in appearance. That has not prevented, however, a bare-knuckled disagreement from developing over their rightful ownership. Peru says the Bingham objects were sent to Yale on loan and their return is long overdue. Yale demurs.

Date Fairness.com Resource Read it at: Oct 24, 2012 Feigning Free Speech on Campus (Op-Ed) QUOTE: Colleges and universities are supposed to be bastions of unbridled inquiry and expression, but they probably do as much to repress free speech as any other institution in young people’s lives.... Since the 1980s, in part because of “political correctness” concerns about racially insensitive speech and sexual harassment, and in part because of the dramatic expansion in the ranks of nonfaculty campus administrators, colleges have enacted stringent speech codes.
New York Times Nov 26, 2011 $5.3B goes to students who government says don't need it QUOTE: Elite universities such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford give aid to families earning as much as $200,000, which less-selective schools say puts pressure on them to also offer grants to higher-income families. Education experts say such subsidies mean less help for lower- and middle-income students, who fall deeper into debt to pay tuition.
USA TODAY Apr 08, 2011 Why is sexual assault on campus tolerated? QUOTE: Universities in the United States rarely expel students for sexual assault… Because of the way universities handle sexual misconduct, it is often the victim who drops out of school.
CNN (Cable News Network) Jun 21, 2010 In Law Schools, Grades Go Up, Just Like That QUOTE: the tactic getting the most attention — and the most controversy — is the sudden, deliberate and dubiously effective grade inflation, which had begun even before the legal job market softened.
New York Times Jun 06, 2010 Colleges offer grants, work-study to reduce students' debt QUOTE: More than 50 colleges -- including elite private schools and flagship state universities in Virginia and Maryland -- have eliminated or capped loans in their financial aid portfolios for some or all students, promising enough aid in grants and work-study to cover most of the gap between what they charge and what each student can afford to pay. At a handful of private universities with sizable endowments, including Princeton, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, the goal is quite literally to eliminate loan debt for most graduating seniors.
Washington Post Aug 12, 2009 Yale Press Bans Images of Muhammad in New Book QUOTE: ...Yale University and Yale University Press consulted two dozen authorities, including diplomats and experts on Islam and counterterrorism, and the recommendation was unanimous: The book, “The Cartoons That Shook the World,” should not include the 12 Danish drawings [depicting Muhammad] that originally appeared in September 2005. What’s more, they suggested that the Yale press also refrain from publishing any other illustrations of the prophet that were to be included...
New York Times Apr 13, 2008 When Strings Are Attached, Quirky Gifts Can Limit Universities QUOTE: Critics of universities say that while sizable portions of university endowments may be restricted, the wealthiest universities still could use more of their endowments to reduce tuition. “It is simply false to claim that donor restrictions prevent increased spending," said Lynne Munson, an adjunct research fellow at the Center for College Affordability and Productivity.
New York Times Apr 10, 2008 Yale Student Is Accused of Lying on Application QUOTE: Mr. Maharaj’s apparent deceit comes at the end of a college admissions season that is the most competitive ever. Yale, for example, offered places to just 8 percent of 23,000 applicants. Education experts say the case highlights a flood of forgeries and other frauds involving academic credentials, as the frenzy continues for spots in elite institutions.
New York Times Feb 19, 2008 Private colleges' crime records going public QUOTE: A Connecticut commission ruled last week that Yale University must provide access to campus police personnel records. It's the latest in a series of rulings mandating greater openness at private universities.
Christian Science Monitor Feb 03, 2008 Grad Students May Get to Unionize: U-Md., Which Doesn't See Them as Employees, Likely to Oppose Bill QUOTE: A Montgomery County lawmaker will introduce legislation tomorrow to allow graduate students and adjunct professors at Maryland's public universities to form unions..."Graduate students are treated like the migrant laborers of higher education," said [a MD state senator].
Washington Post Oct 01, 2007 Yale Law, Newly Defeated, Allows Military Recruiters QUOTE: At question is a statute called the Solomon Amendment, which allows the federal government to withhold funds from universities that do not extend the same welcome to military recruiters as they do to other recruiters.
New York Times Sep 28, 2007 The New Affirmative Action QUOTE: But in the early 1990s, the elite campuses began to pull back from their aggressive affirmative-action policies, and in 1996, California voters passed the California Civil Rights Initiative, also known as Proposition 209. After that, race could no longer be a factor in government hiring or public-university admissions. The number of black students at both Berkeley and U.C.L.A. plummeted, and at U.C.L.A. the declines continued throughout the next decade.
New York Times Jun 24, 2007 The Possessed QUOTE: Everyone agrees that the Machu Picchu artifacts at Yale are modest in appearance. That has not prevented, however, a bare-knuckled disagreement from developing over their rightful ownership. Peru says the Bingham objects were sent to Yale on loan and their return is long overdue. Yale demurs.
New York Times Apr 25, 2007 OSHA Leaves Worker Safety in Hands of Industry QUOTE: ...OSHA’s practices under the Bush administration, which vowed to limit new rules and roll back what it considered cumbersome regulations that imposed unnecessary costs on businesses and consumers. Across Washington, political appointees — often former officials of the industries they now oversee — have eased regulations or weakened enforcement of rules on issues like driving hours for truckers, logging in forests and corporate mergers.
New York Times Mar 10, 2007 Law School Deans Speak Out on Web Site Content: Yale, Penn Condemn Anonymous Attacks QUOTE: The deans at two top law schools have admonished the operators of an Internet message board that hosts chats containing personal attacks against female students and racist and homophobic remarks. Letters written by the deans at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania law schools, were issued after an article in The Washington Post aired the debate over AutoAdmit, a message board that was created as a forum to exchange advice on law schools and firms.
Washington Post Feb 23, 2007 History: At Yale, She’s Telling the American Indian Story to an Eager Audience QUOTE: But despite the modern-day support groups, the transition to Ivy League is not always an easy one. In October 2004, Anaay’s Indigenous Day celebration sparked an encounter with racism that led to open discussion, the forming of an advisory board and the hiring of a freshman peer counselor: As Ms. Hemmers and her friends were walking through campus, where a display honoring the contributions their ancestors had made to modern culture was set up, they saw racial epithets chalked on the sidewalk alluding to Anaay as “savages,” “squaws” and “braves.”
New York Times Feb 11, 2007 Doctors and Drug Makers: A Move to End Cozy Ties QUOTE: The new initiative, called the Prescription Project, is an outgrowth of an article published in January 2006 in The Journal of the American Medical Association in which a coalition of scholars and doctors proposed that academic medical centers across the country take the lead in restricting interactions between doctors and the health care industry.
New York Times Sep 13, 2006 Harvard's fairness lesson QUOTE: Harvard has come to believe that the practice unfairly favors students from sophisticated high schools and families -- and that binding programs favor those who have little concern about financial aid.

And they are a peculiar breed, these larger-than-life corporate titans. For Redstone and fellow moguls like News Corp. (NWS ) Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch and Liberty Media (LCAPA ) Chairman John Malone, the business is inextricably tangled with their own personal images—and family fortunes.
BusinessWeek Sep 06, 2006 9/11 Leaves Its Mark on History Classes QUOTE: Scholars disagree on the direction of the reframing of American history, sometimes along ideological lines. While many historians say 9/11 accelerated a push toward “internationalizing” American history — looking at what Thomas Bender, a professor of history at New York University, called “a common history with common causes for central events in American history” — some others said 9/11 had renewed their interest in an almost opposite idea, that of American exceptionalism.
