September 2016: 'Trump’s burgeoning pay-to-not-be-played scandal features the substantial donation he made to Florida’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, just days before she decided not to join a multistate lawsuit over alleged fraud at Trump University. It certainly looks as if Trump was paying Bondi to “do whatever the hell” he wanted her to do. But despite the many levels of gross surrounding the donation, the lackluster investigation of fraud, and the lavish fundraiser Trump then provided Bondi at bargain-basement prices, any attempt to prove in a court that he, or she, did anything illegal will be an uphill climb. This is in no small part thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court. Its unanimous decision last spring in McDonnell v. United States made it vastly easier to purchase politicians and far harder to prosecute corruption. Today, post-McDonnell, prosecutors are too freaked out to bring anti-corruption cases, and nobody is happier about that than Trump and Bondi.'

July 2016: 'On Friday, Mr. Trump argued that the script might fall under the legal concept of “puffery” — which many legal dictionaries define as an exaggeration or statement that “no reasonable person” would take as factual. And in any event, he continued, the true sinners in the Trump University case are the students who sued him even after giving rave reviews in their written evaluations of the seminars. “I think that’s dishonest,” he said.'

May 2016: "In blunt testimony revealed on Tuesday, former managers of Trump University, the for-profit school started by Donald J. Trump, portray it as an unscrupulous business that relied on high-pressure sales tactics, employed unqualified instructors, made deceptive claims and exploited vulnerable students willing to pay tens of thousands for Mr. Trump’s insights."

Jul 16, 2016 Donald Trump’s Deals Rely on Being Creative With the Truth

QUOTE: [Trump's] long, operatic record as a swaggering business tycoon. And without question, there will be successes aplenty to highlight, from his gleaming golden high-rises to his well-regarded golf resorts, hit TV shows and best-selling books. But a survey of Mr. Trump’s four decades of wheeling and dealing also reveals an equally operatic record of dissembling and deception, some of it unabashedly confirmed by Mr. Trump himself, who nearly 30 years ago first extolled the business advantages of “truthful hyperbole.” Indeed, based on the mountain of court records churned out over the span of Mr. Trump’s career, it is hard to find a project he touched that did not produce allegations of broken promises, blatant lies or outright fraud.

QUOTE: ...there has always been a close association between the movement and the operations of snake-oil salesmen — people who use lists of campaign contributors, right-wing websites and so on to sell get-rich-quick schemes and miracle health cures. Sometimes the political link is direct...Sometimes it just seems to reflect a judgment on the part of the grifters that people who can be persuaded that President Obama is Muslim can also be persuaded that there are easy money-making opportunities the establishment doesn’t want you to know about.
