Lawyer Whose Disclosure Brought Down a Judge Is Punished

Date: April 20, 2003

QUOTE: A lawyer who divulged a client's confidences to bring down a corrupt judge acted improperly, the Washington Supreme Court ruled on Thursday. It suspended the lawyer, Douglas Schafer, for six months.

ABSTRACT: The Washington Supreme Court  ruled 6-3 to impose a six-month suspension on a lawyer who revealed a client’s confidential information--- information that helped remove a corrupt judge. Some legal experts applaud the Court’s decision to suspend the lawyer, claiming that lawyer-client confidence laws are vital for the continued maintenance of a healthy legal system. Others contend the legal system’s health was better served by a restoration of public trust, and that, in this case, the ends of removing a corrupt judge justified the means of violating a confidence.
