Labeling Rules Urged for 'Organic' Beauty Products

Date: April 19, 2003
Author: Melinda Fulmer
QUOTE: As sales soar, advocates seek federal standards. But the industry can't agree on a definition.

ABSTRACT: Organic activists argue that the federal government should protect consumers by placing strict standards on what beauty products can be labeled "organic". They argue that many products that only have one or two organic ingredients but still use the word on the label may mislead the public into believing something is more organic than it really is. The U.S. Department of Agriculture already regulates organic food but not cosmetics. --- Sara Holliday
