- QUOTE: Caste discrimination is outlawed but continues to persist in obvious and subtle ways, and the contest over the latest university admissions quotas revolve around how to best redress an entrenched and often ugly social bias...The proposal to extend the caste quotas last year set off blistering protests, primarily by medical students who argued that merit should be the only basis for admission to India’s intensely competitive medical schools. The legal challenge was filed by a group of medical students.
