Thousands of Schools May Run Afoul of New Law

Date: February 16, 2003
Author: Sam Dillon
QUOTE: The formula used to identify underperforming schools is so unwieldy that President Bush described a Michigan elementary school he visited last year as "excelling" just three months before it was declared below standard.

ABSTRACT: This article discusses problems with the statistical criteria used by the current Bush administration's No Child Left Behind Act to identify substandard schools. Even a school touted as success by President Bush found itself on the list of failing schools just 3 months after the president gave a speech glorifying the school's accomplishments.
