A Web Site in India That Revealed Graft Becomes a Target

QUOTE: Nearly two years ago, Tehelka, which means sensation in Hindi, caused one. Nine months after its founding, the news Web site burst forth with videotape showing politicians, bureaucrats, military officers and middlemen seeking and taking bribes from arms dealers.

ABSTRACT: Tehelka, a news web site exploring the corruption of the Indian government, is under extreme attacks by the government they were investigating. Temporarily shocked by the exposes, the government has fiercely attempted to destroy Tehelka. Reporters have been kept away from their duties, suffering public defamation, jail time, tax investigations—-all of which have reduced Tehelka down its bare minimum staff, housing, and funds. The future in now shaky for Tehelka.
