U.N. Begins Choosing the Judges for New Court
- Date: February 6, 2003
- QUOTE: ...the United Nations moved forward this week toward creating an International Criminal Court — a project that America's allies hope the United States will support over time.
- ABSTRACT: The United Nations begins to elect judges to serve on the International Criminal Court while still seeking US support. The Bush administration did not support the Court last year, due to concern over safeguarding American troops. The US and some other countries are concerned that the Court may become politicized, and also question the need for the court versus use of the ad hoc tribunals successfully implemented for the persecution of war crimes in Rwanda and the Balkans.
