With a Lawsuit Pending, Charities Are Divided Over Disclosure

Date: February 2, 2003
Author: Stephanie Strom
QUOTE: ...whether the First Amendment prohibits a state from bringing charges of fraud against a professional fund-raiser that has told potential donors their contributions will be used for charitable purposes but, in fact, keeps the vast majority of their gifts.

ABSTRACT: This article discusses a court case, which will address non-profit organizations' obligations to more fully disclose their intended uses of raised money. Non-profit organizations routinely use telemarketers to raise funds for relief efforts. The bulk of these funds never reach the donor's intended cause.
