New York Reaches Deal to End Legal Fight on Homeless
- Date: January 18, 2003
- QUOTE: New York City and lawyers for the homeless agreed to create an independent panel to help the city shape its long-range policy for homeless families.
- ABSTRACT: After a 20-year court battle between New York City and its homeless over the rights of homeless families, the two sides agreed to create an independent panel that will assist in future policy making decisions. The panel will mediate disputes between the parties for the next two years and, more importantly, review such policies as how quickly the families must be placed in shelters and whether families who refuse an appropriate apartment could be evicted.
