Canada blocks free Net TV
- Date: January 17, 2003
- QUOTE: Canadian regulators ruled Friday that it is illegal to put broadcast TV signals onto the Internet without permission, dashing the hopes of entrepreneurs hoping to create new Net TV businesses.
- ABSTRACT: Some start-up television companies have attempted to avoid international copyright law by retransmitting television signals online ("netTV") without authorization from copyright holders or broadcasting stations. The rebroadcasting disregards national boundaries, making the rebroadcasted programs available to anyone with Internet access and thus threatening the exclusive rights of copyright holders. Consequently, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission ruled that such unauthorized transmission was illegal.
