Justices Hear Challenge to Copyright Law: Extensions Stifle Access, Opponents Say; Government Claims Congressional Prerogative

Date: October 10, 2002
Author: Charles Lane
QUOTE: ...a much-anticipated oral argument on a novel constitutional issue: For how long may Congress extend copyrights on literature, art, music and film?

ABSTRACT: Copyright laws were created to protect and promote creative individuals in art and science fields, but now the Supreme Court will decide whether Congress was within its rights to extend the length of copyrights. Opposing scholars and publishers are concerned that they (and the public at large) won't get free access to important cultural treasures, and they claim that such an extension would be unconstitutional.
