QUOTE: The first strike ever at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center...has raised concerns among striking union members, workers still on the island and government officials about the center's ability to function safely and effectively.

ABSTRACT: Disagreement over wages and benefits has prompted the first ever strike at the well-known Plum Island Animal Disease Center, a high-security laboratory that conducts research about dangerous infectious animal diseases. The strike puts the center in a dangerous position, and there’s a great deal of concern that it won’t be able to operate safely without a trained fire department and experienced workers. Already problems have occurred on the island which officials say are the result of “inexperienced workers being rushed in to replace the strikers.”
