A Long Road of Broken Promises for Black Farmers: USDA Fights Claims After Landmark Deal

Date: August 13, 2002
Author: Neely Tucker
QUOTE: ...many thousand other farmers have had their claims rejected, the totals of payouts and forgiven loans are far short of what was projected, and the USDA...is battling almost every claim filed.

ABSTRACT: After filing a class-action lawsuit for discriminatory loan practices, black farmers were promised a settlement that would erase their debts to the government, give them $50,000, and grant them priority for new loans. However, almost all black farmers’ claims are now being battled by the USDA, and their legal representation has “bordered on malpractice.” One disappointed farmer laments, "What was promised and what has been delivered have been two different things."
