I'll Tell You What's Wrong with Petitions (No Signature Required)

Date: August 11, 2002
Author: Prof. Jamin B. Raskin Esq.
QUOTE: Massive signature requirements impose a pointless burden on outsider candidates that becomes an all-consuming drain on their campaigns.

ABSTRACT: Should political candidates be required to submit a minimum number of signatures to qualify to run for office? Jamin B. Raskin voices his opinion that lengthy signature requirements designed to keep “frivolous” candidates off the ballot should be abolished. He believes “in a pluralistic democracy, political frivolousness lies in the eye of the beholder, and it is up to the voters to decide how serious a candidate is."
