Widespread Water Violations Decried

Date: August 7, 2002
Author: Eric Pianin
QUOTE: Nearly one-third of major industrial facilities and government-operated sewage treatment plants have significantly violated water pollution discharge regulations...but relatively few are being prosecuted.

ABSTRACT: Many major facilities have been accused of "significant noncompliance" with discharge requirements over the past two years, but very few are being held accountable for their actions. Lenient courts and loose regulation have increased waste and chemical dumping into rivers and streams without consequence.
