Australia Begins Transferring Asylum Seekers

ABSTRACT: Resource scarce Australia, already overburdened by the demands of its own population on the spare fertile strips of land found only along its coastlines, refuses to become the refuge of waves of international asylum seekers brought by people smugglers.  This latest incident, incvolving 430 hopeful migrants, mostly from Afghanistan, were rescued from a sinking smuggler's freighter but forbidden to enter Australian territory, until an Australian court intervened.
