Journalist Cited for Contempt in Leak Probe: Reporter Refused To Discuss Sources

Date: October 8, 2004
Author: Carol D. Leonnig

QUOTE: A federal judge found New York Times reporter Judith Miller in contempt of court yesterday and ordered her jailed for as long as 18 months for refusing to answer questions before a grand jury investigating the leak of a covert CIA operative's identity to the news media.

ABSTRACT: A district court judge held New York Times journalist Judith Miller in contempt of court and ordered her jailed for up to 18 months for refusing to disclose details of conversations held with confidential sources. U.S. District Chief Judge Thomas F. Hogan stated that reporters couldn’t defy subpoenas in criminal investigations. Even though Ms. Miller's source waived the right to confidentiality, Miller and the newspaper are fighting disclosure because they fear it would weaken reporters' ability to obtain information.
