For China, One Party is Enough, Leader Says
- Date: September 15, 2004
- QUOTE: The Chinese Communist Party chief, Hu Jintao, said Wednesday that Western-style multiparty democracy was a "blind alley'' for China and that the one-party state would fight "power abuse and corruption" by policing itself better.
- ABSTRACT: Chinese president, Hu Jintao, indicated his reluctance to embrace Western-style democracy in a televised address to the nation. Ahead of a high-level party meeting Mr. Hu appears to be more concerned with infighting over his predecessors, Jiang Zemin, continued role as China's military chief. While both men seem to be struggling for power and influence issues such a corruption, discontent and an over-heating economy are being sidelined.
