Many Local Officials Now Make Inmates Pay Their Own Way

Date: August 13, 2004
Author: Fox Butterfield
QUOTE: To help cover the costs of incarceration, corrections officers and politicians are more frequently billing inmates for their room and board, an idea popular with voters.

ABSTRACT: Some sheriff's departments are charging inmates fees for room and board in addition to their original criminal fines to cover prison costs, which appeals to many taxpayers. The fees, aimed at combating tight local budgets, raise questions about constitutionality, the effect they may have on inmates who are released and trying to financially establish themselves again, and how much they actually help when compared to total prison costs.
