All acquitted in drug kickbacks case: Jury deals a blow to US prosecutors

Date: July 15, 2004
Authors: Shelley Murphy and Alice Dembner
QUOTE: In a blow to government prosecutors, a federal jury acquitted eight current and former employees of TAP Pharmaceutical Products yesterday of conspiring to win business by paying bribes and kickbacks to doctors and hospitals. The verdict vindicating the employees...follows TAP's 2001 payment of a record $885 million federal fine to settle similar charges.

ABSTRACT: An acquittal was the verdict reached by the federal jury despite the prosecutorsÂ’ argument that employees and former employees of TAP Pharmaceuticals Products gave kickbacks such as expensive dinners, skiing excursions, complimentary drug samples and tickets to sporting events to doctors to sway them into prescribing TAPÂ’s drugs as well as other medications.
