Trafficked and trapped
- Date: December 5, 2003
- QUOTE: The police say up to 1,400 women a year are brought into [Britain] illegally to be prostituted and that the trade has become as lucrative as drugs.
- ABSTRACT: The smuggling of young girls from Eastern Europe to work as prostitutes on the streets of London is becoming an increasingly worrying phenomenon for the local police trying to fight the crime of sex slavery. Tricked into going abroad by the promise of better lives, many become mere commodities in the hands of their captors, unable to escape because of the fear of persecution by criminal gangs at home and the fear of immigration police in the UK.
