Guardian system overrun by abuse: People lose their rights quickly and without necessity, report says

Date: October 25, 2003
Author: Wendy Wendland-Bowyer
QUOTE: ...a state audit of five probate courts, released Friday, found widespread abuses by court-appointed conservators entrusted with the finances of young, elderly and disabled people.

ABSTRACT: A three year study found very serious flaws with Michigan' method of appointing legal guardians. The people being 'protected' had little input or protections in what was often a hurried, flawed process resulting in their loss of control over their own lives. In many cases a guardian was not even necessary.
